Rust am Neusiedlersee
Lake Neusiedl is located on the eastern end of Austria, in the province of Burgenland, and borders Hungary.
It is one of the few remaining Steppe lakes in central Europe. In size, the lake is approximately 120 square miles, and
is about 22 miles long and between 3 and 7 miles wide. It is also no more than 6 feet deep.
Most of the lake is surrounded by reeds, and provides a haven for several species of migratory birds and a safe environment for wildlife.
Rust is a small city that lies on the south-western shore of Neusiedlersee.
Long known as "the city of storks and wine" the variety of Rust wines is best enjoyed directly in one of the more than
40 Rust restaurants. The spectrum ranges from rustic wine taverns to dignified top restaurants. Whether you are looking for a
light, a hearty, a large or a small accompaniment to the Ruster wine, you are guaranteed to find the right place.
The Rust restaurateurs can draw from a wide range of local ingredients for their menus. Fish, meat, vegetables
and fruit from the region are processed into high-quality menus in the Rust kitchens.
Sports acrivities are well catered for - hiking, nordic walking, runners and cyclists will find a well-signposted network of trails that
stretches over 50 km in the Rust hills. Of course, the lake invites you to all kinds of water sports in summer and winter such as sailing,
surfing, swimming, paddle boarding, ice skating.
The culturally minded will get their money's worth in the free city of Rust. While thousands of visitors attend the opera
and operetta festival in the immediate vicinity, even high-quality cultural events on a small scale have established themselves in Rust,
such as the guitar festival.
